Joseph Hirsch

(American, 1910-1981)
Journey, 1949

oil on canvas, 32 x 19 inches

The Christmas symbolism of this picture is not subtle. If the animal suggests the traditional beast of burden then the oldness of the man might be the wisdom of the prophet; the trombone can call to mind the heraldry of trumpets; the child becomes the Child; the umbrella as His halo, with the crowning poinsettia as the Star of Bethlehem.

Artist's statement in the catalogue The Hallmark Art Award, Kansas City: Hallmark Cards, Inc. 1949. p. 34.
