It didn’t matter,
after the storm,
that the only things left
were the clothes
on their backs,
they said.
They still had each other
and their memories
and a little time left
to rebuild a life.
Only this time –
this time –
they said to themselves,
the foundation
would be deeper,
hold faster,
and anchor them both
to what they always had
but had forgotten –
something not even
God on a bad day
could blow away.
