Alex Colville, Three Shepherds, 1955
André du Broc
The three boys wait in the wee hours of the night.
Three young shepherds keeping watch.
Their flock, heads lowered
to the earth as if in prayer
grasp at the bounty of green.
The night sky absent of moon,
shimmers like a delicate tapestrya
flickering canopy of the bluest grey.
The crisp and quiet breeze
mutters the faintest of songs-
A hymn of hope. A saintly psalm.
On such a night the heavens
once heralded a small child.
The song echoes gently still.
